Calligraphy

One of our Chinese intern teacher is also a calligraphy master...

after class one day he taught us how to write a few caracters!

Well... it's much harder than it seems!
He said that when we wrote our lines were too straight.
Calligraphy is not like writting, it's an art.
The end of the lines have to be slightly thicker and rounded. And each caracter has to be well balanced and in harmony with the others...

I did my best... and it looked pretty good to me...
but when the other intern teacher saw my first caracter she cracked up laughing and said
"Oooh you caracter seem too happy! So cute"

Hmm I'm guessing it wasn't meant as a compliment, but I could live with it!

  4. It's fun to read this and see that the ideal of the Chinese written word can be missed just as ours is missed. Our personal writing style still effects the appearance of the message. I just hope that in Chinese, it doesn't effect the message itself.

  5. "Too happy"? What a nice way of saying or implying!
I have been reading your mother's blog for years and loved reading about the trip to China.
The company my husband and I work for has a factory and shops in China, one of them in Suzhou (http://www.coco-mat.com/web/en/).
Though we haven't been there,we have met people in company meetings. Your photos and descriptions are mesmerizing!
Wishing you the very best in life!

    1. Hi ! I'm so glad I can help out :)
Do you have an email address I can write you on ?
Suzhou and China in general was a wonderful experience for me. It was a bit hard to adjust at first but mostly because i arrived in January and it was freezing and everyone was on vacation and i didn't know a word of Chinese...
Do you know where your university is located ?
My school has a campus in Suzhou Higher Education Town so there are always a bunch of us over there. One of my friends will be studying there in September, maybe you can meet !
